Backpack Program

First Baptist and First United Methodist Churches jointly provide backpacks of food for selected kids at the Newton Elementary School. This program is sponsored by the school and the Southeast Texas Food Bank. The Southeast Texas Food Bank supplies all of the food at no cost to the school or Newton. We receive shipments of food, package it in plastic grocery bags, store the bags, take them to NES, and put them in individual backpacks for the kids. These are needy kids who have been recommended for the program because the school feels there is a need for food assistance in the home. School staff determines which children are in need of food assistance on the weekends.  If you are interested in supporting this program, please contact the Southeast Texas Food Bank to make a donation in honor of the Newton Elementary BackPack Program. Please contact Grace Mathis at the Southeast Texas Food Bank if you have any questions about the program: 409.839.8777

Of course, we cannot show any pictures of the kids because we protect their confidentiality, but the following pictures were taken when we were packaging bags at the church on May 22, 2009. Grace Mathis of the Southeast Texas Food Bank participated along with Carmen who is from Puerto Rico. Carmen is starting a program in Puerto Rico, and she wanted to see what was involved in implementing and sustaining a back pack program. Assisting were Dale Beaty, Susan Karpel, Kathy Miller, and Linda King.
