The Mennonite Disaster Service

2008 -- 2009

What is the Mennonite Disaster Service? Who are these people who have returned to Newton, Texas, to assist in Rita Recovery work of the 4th year in a role? Their website gives a full description but their mission is as follows:

Mennonite Disaster Service is a volunteer network through which various constituencies of the Anabaptist church can respond to those affected by disasters in Canada and the United States.

While our main focus is on clean up, repair and rebuilding homes, this activity becomes a means of touching lives and helping people regain faith and wholeness.

The MDS returned to Newton in the fall of 2008 for 6 months of work. There were two groups: An RV group was stationed on the property of First United Methodist Church, and another group stayed at the East Texas Baptist Encampment.

The initial arrival of MDS RV group began on September 29, 2008. This "RV park" is located on FUMC property.

This is how the RV park looked on October 9.

On Sunday, October 12, 2008, FUMC had a pot luck dinner in honor of MDS. Both the RV group and the East Texas Encampment group were invited. The dinner was immediately following the worship service that morning.
