Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church

One of the flagship churches of the Texas Annual Conference, Moody is located in Galveston, Texas, about one block off of the seawall. Moody has a big impact on the community, the Texas Annual Conference, and the world. They are very outreach and mission oriented, supporting significant social service activities through their work and financial support. For more information about this extraordinary church please go their website at www.Moody.org They have already supported Newton through Rita Restoration funds used to repair homes in the area, and they came to Newton to work from March 26-28. 2007. The group that came was composed of an atypical church group. Many of their staff, including the senior pastor, Bert Bagley, came to work. They even brought a Bishop and his spouse! Through the Permanent Endowment Fund, Moody has supported our new Christian Community Life Center, and other restoration projects noted.

The following pictures were taken during their work efforts here in Newton between March 26 and March 28. Their biggest project was the home of Carl Forward in Newton. Mr. Forward's roof was blown off by Rita, and significant structural damage was done. Of course, the inside was soaked with water damaging the floors, walls, and ceilings. Citizens Organized for Rita Restoration (CORR) had already identified this house as a priority and had obtained funds for materials for the roof and foundation from DETCOG. The labor for the repairs was paid by the Permanent Endowment Fund of Moody, so it seemed natural for the group to undertake other necessary repairs. The floors had to be removed and replaces in some places to allow the foundation to be put back in order. Plus the bathroom floor had gotten so wet that it was beginning to fall through the house. The work group did repairs to the flooring and removed and replaced the fixtures in the bathroom. The toilet and lavatory were also replaced with new ones. All interior work was done by the Moody group, and they purchased the necessary materials, also. They stayed at Whispering Creek who gives a special discount to work groups and provides extra services for them. The roofing materials are on location. The contractor will be paid with money donated by Moody.

This is the group that arrived on Sunday evening, March 25. They look very rested, and they are going to need all of their strength for the work ahead. From left to right is Sam Caminade (Maintenance person par excellence), Mrs. Intipampa (spouse of Bishop Dr. Carlos Intipampa), Charles Bagley (associate pastor), Bert Bagley (senior pastor), Renee Templer (Children's ministry and director of the day school) and Joanna Elliott (church organist).

This is the same group minus Joanna and including Amanda Matthys in pink top (Youth ministry) and Mike Gilbert (Music ministry) to the far right. They are in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, Newton.

This is the work team inside of our new Christian Community Life Center. We have just received a very gracious and generous grant from the Permanent Endowment Fund at Moody to install air conditioning and heating in the gym portion of the building.

Pearl Sowell, who lives in Shankleville, had her roof replaced by CORR last year, and the UM ARMY team rebuilt her front porch and painted the exterior of the house. The Moody team painted her bedroom for her.

Mr. Ira Lank lives in Newton, and he needs two outside doors replaced. The doors were on the site already. Time was running short, but some of the group completed installation of the back door, which was the one in the worst shape.
