Our Youth

The United Methodist Temple in Port Arthur graciously invited all of the Southeast Texas District churches to their annual New Year's Eve Youth Lock-in. The event started at 6 PM and ended at 7 AM the next morning. The event consisted of several "big toys": a pedestal joust , a 38 foot rock wall , a 1000 square foot obstacle course, and a 3 lane bungee run. They were also equipped with 2 ping pong tables , pool , air hockey , foosball , Sega , playstation2 , x-box , Nintendo , playstaion1 , and numerous board games. There were tons of food (including a huge stack of pizzas and a beef brisket) and goodies of all kinds. However, all was not fun and games. There was an awesome worship service led by Shannon Sistrunk, the Director of Youth Ministries at the Temple, and Rev. Chuck Huffman, Senior Pastor. The Temple has a great praise group of singers and instrumentalists, and a very lively choir. We had an exceptionally meaningful Holy Communion that closed the old year and led us into the new year with our Lord and Savior. The following pictures were shots taken during the fun part of the event.

A lot of games took place in the gymnasium that also houses the worship services (the sanctuary has not been completed after being destroyed by Rita)

Grace and poise are very important components of the obstacle course!

Making faces also helps

The Bungee run was one of the more difficult games to "beat". The runner wears a vest that has a bungee cord attached in the back and fixed to the game itself. The concept is to run as hard as you can (towards the camera in these pictures) before the bungee cords pulls you backwards and you fall. Harder to do that it looks.

The 38 feet high rock wall had to be the favorite game of the night. It is equipped with a cord and counter weight, slowing descent but helping very little (if any) with the actual climbing. Many tried, and many failed.

I am determined!

After the inflatable toys were disassembled, there was an exciting fireworks display!
