On Thursday, August 10, 2006, The Newton Chamber of Commerce had its regularly scheduled meeting at First United Methodist Church. This event featured two different speakers, both of which head important youth programs in Newton. The first was Mark Karpel from the Newton Gym and Boxing Club. This organization helps youth mature physically, mentally, academically, and morally. Coach Ed Tracy was also present. Mark introduced some of the youth and young men who participate as part of this organization. Mark was followed by the legendary Head Football Coach and Athletic Director of Newton High School, Coach Curtis Barbay. Coach Barbay had created a dynasty of winners at Newton, but he also cares for the youth that come through the system. He helps prepare kids for life. He told a story of a man who just came back to visit him who had been one of his players in 1965! |
