Rita Restoration

One of the most complete projects that was accomplished was the brand new house built for Brenda Fay Adams and her family in Sand Jack, Texas. A very small, rural community in Newton County. This house was build by Habit for Humanity of St Joseph County, Indiana. The house was actually first build in a shopping mall in South Bend, Indiana. For you football fans Notre Dame is located in South Bend, the home of the Fighting Irish football team of legendary status. The following are a few pictures from the that first build.
Once the framing of the house was completed, it was marked for reassembly; pieces of it were signed by the various builders who participated; it was disassembled; put on a semi-trailer; and shipped to Texas.
Now, let us jump to Sand Jack and see what the home of Brenda Fay looked like before Habitat arrived
No one would look very happy if there home was totally destroyed by Hurricane Rita. No this is not New Orleans, but things could not be much worse than this!
The truck from Indiana arrived on Saturday, January 7, and the fun begins!
These big, strong looking gentlemen are more than big and strong. They are members of the 2005 Texas State Championship football team. The pride of Newton, Texas, the Newton Eagle Football Team. Mrs. Adam's son is Josh Alfred, one of the seniors on that team. So his buddies were present to help do as much of the work as they could after school was over each day. They are fine young men as well as outstanding athletes!
This is Josh Alfred right after winning the state championship game!
Most of the workers who were present 8+ hours per day were experienced Habitat volunteers from Indiana. But the passion to be a part of helping others spread throughout the county and beyond. Courtney Tracy is a graduate of Newton High School and is currently going to Law School at the University of Texas.

After everything was unloaded on Saturday, the assembly began in earnest on Monday. There was a 2 week window to get everything done.

U.S. Congressman, Kevin Brady, came by to help build...Yes, he was really working!
